By social media presence I primarily mean Facebook and Twitter. This is a great service to offer because most small businesses are not leveraging the power of social media. As part of this service, all you need to do is go in to the business and take internal and external photographs and maybe some photographs of the staff.

Next, you create a basic fan page for the business and upload the photographs (takes three minutes and it’s completely free!) Do the same thing with Twitter.

For this service you can easily charge somewhere around $200 or £150 and it is something you start offering straight away! As a local business marketing consultant, you should always be looking for a way to generate more revenue for your business. One way to do this is to consider upselling your client on to other services. If you sell the social media presence service, you could upsell them ‘rights’ to the photographs you have taken so that they can use them outside of their social media marketing. Money for nothing!

One big mistake I see people make time and time again when they start offering local business marketing services is that they have no ONLINE PRESENCE themselves! How can you possibly sell somebody a website when you don’t have one yourself? It just doesn’t make sense. So before you offer any services, except for the cool one I shared above, make sure you build a basic site for yourself first.

The best way to sell small businesses marketing services is to contact businesses by telephone or by mail. In my experience email does not work and other forms of attracting small businesses require advertising budgets. You could just walk in unannounced but this isn’t my style so I cannot comment on whether this works.

Here’s a local business marketing script you can use, adjust it depending on the service you are intending to offer.

“Good Morning/Afternoon. I am a [Web Designer] and I’ve just set up in the local area. I am just phoning around local businesses to see if you would be interested in a website because I’ve noticed you don’t have one. Would you be interested in getting more clients with one?”

Once you get a yes, make sure you tell them exactly what you’re giving to give them and what the next steps are. Make sure to also be paid at least 50% or more upfront before you start the job.
